Why should my child take lessons?

There are many reasons why your student may be interested in or need private music lessons. This is a short list, but hits the main points. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Band directors simply don’t have enough time to address every student’s specific playing needs.

As great as our band directors may be, they simply do not have the capability to give a student the one-on-one attention equivalent to a private lesson. Although many of the same topics are discussed in class, individual progress is not monitored as closely as with private lessons.

To remove the guesswork and relieve frustration and anxiety.

Private instructors are able to match instruction to the ability level of your child, keeping them challenged and moving forward at their pace. Private instruction also builds confidence, reducing performance anxiety and allowing your child to experience the joy of playing music.

Enhance the already powerful benefits of learning a musical instrument.

The studied benefits of learning a musical instrument are numerous and well documented - music performance requires most of the brain to be active at once. Even if your child stops playing after a year of music lessons, those benefits will continue throughout their whole lives, helping them in math, reading, language studies, sports, and so on. Music is a full-body, full-brain activity.

It teaches them how to practice.

Understanding the process of practicing a skill, and seeing that a little hard work today can lead to a massive gain in a month or a year teaches students the power of long-term thinking. It also gives them the skill set to approach anything that may challenge them in life, including college coursework - I know from experience! Other areas that this can be used are sports, fitness of any kind, and any of the other arts. Nothing beats learning how to do intentional practice.

Private lessons can help a child who is struggling to keep up in band, or propel a student who feels held back by the group.

Whether your budding musician is first chair or last, private lessons can help. More advanced students need more advanced material and instruction to push them, while struggling musicians may need a little guidance to find out they’re just as talented as that guy in first chair.

Supports students who wish to pursue music scholarships for college.

College tuition can break the bank, but a student who is excellent at their instrument can often receive scholarships to help them pay for it. Even if they don’t intend to be a music major, many colleges will still give music scholarships, and lessons prepare them for those auditions.
